Heiwa means peace in Japanese. Eating a plant-based diet creates a more peaceful planet.
Eat local. Eat well.
WE are a family committed to eating local and organic foods in season. We value community and we value good clean food. We love growing our own food and supporting local farmers.
We moved to Midcoast Maine in fall 2004. Jeff taught high school physics and chemistry for five years and missed participating in the local foods system. He started thinking about starting a local tofu business in 2007 and by fall 2008, he started producing in downtown Camden.
Our soybeans are MOFGA certified, grown outside of Skowhegan. If we run out of Maine grown beans, we use non-GMO, pesticide-free beans bought directly from a farmer in NY state. We currently produce 700 pounds of tofu a week that gets distributed locally and throughout the state with Crown of Maine Organic Cooperative.
Our factory is the outcome of many generous hands and minds coming together.
Special thanks to: our families for supporting our business venture, farmers Bob Reisner and Bob Crowe for their hard work, Paul Cartwright for his inventions and willingness to help, Rudy Canales, a master tofu maker in Boston for his advice, support, and years of service as a tofu maker, Jory Squibb for helping us lift some very heavy pieces of equipment, Rob Lovell for selling us his tofu making equipment that he kept in his barn for over 20 years, Ryan Bulger and my sister, Nao, for creating a website, many friends who care for our daughters when needed, our local community who has so eagerly supported us, and our loyal customers all over the state and beyond. Our heart goes out to you all.
