FAQS

Answers to your questions

Do I need to press the tofu?

No. Many recipes recommend pressing before cooking, but we don’t find it necessary with Heiwa Tofu

How do I cook tofu?

We have a number of recipes here on our website that are family favorites. You can also eat it right out of the package. Try it with a few drops of tamari or this sesame garlic sauce!

Is the tofu gluten-free?

We do not add any gluten containing ingredients to our tofu, nor do we use any in our production.

How much calcium is in the tofu?

Typically, tofu has between 300 and 400 milligrams of calcium per 100 grams of tofu. The exact amount depends on the bean variety and batch to batch variations.

Does tofu need to be cooked to be eaten?

Not at all. During production, the soybeans are cooked so tofu can be eaten straight out of the package.

How long is tofu good for?

Unopened and kept in the fridge, tofu will keep for at least 75 days from the day it is made, or 2 ½ months. Each package has a best by date stamped on the back. After opening, it should be eaten within one week.

What is the best way to store tofu?

This is a complex question. The goal is to minimize the introduction and growth of spoilage microbes. We like to keep any uneaten tofu in the package, put a rubber band around it, and store it upright in the fridge to be eaten within the next few days. (We also try to keep any tofu that we aren’t going to use in the bag when we cut it.) Some customers keep their tofu submerged in water in a clean container in the fridge and change the water daily to rinse some of the spoilage microbes. Once cooked, storing the tofu in a clean container in the fridge and eating it within a week is a good idea.

Do you ship tofu?

Unfortunately, we do not, as it is cost prohibitive. If you are in New England or New York, you can check out our Where to Buy and Eat page for restaurants and stores near you. If you are can’t find somewhere, please reach out to us and we will try to find a place for you to buy our tofu. If you are interested in wholesale, please contact us directly as we have distributors throughout New England and New York state.

Can I freeze tofu?

Absolutely. However, freezing tofu will change the texture dramatically, giving it a sponge like feel.

Is the tofu organic/non - GMO?

Yes. We are MOFGA and USDA certified organic.

What firmness level is Heiwa tofu?

The tofu is medium firm, though many people find that they don’t need to press it and that it’s highly adaptable. It’s perfectly firm for grilling and sautes, and still soft enough for dressings, dips, and smoothies.

What makes Heiwa tofu different?

Our tofu has a texture that’s firm yet still tender and creamy. It tastes like fresh soybeans unlike the blandness of some national brands. We work personally with farmers across New England and New York to source our organic soybeans. Being a small business allows us to focus on our employees’ needs and the community’s values, creating an impact on the Midcoast and beyond.
